Do Not be Afraid

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Insights | 1 Comment

Here’s a picture I snagged off of Facebook.  Since I don’t have time to go through the Bible book by book and confirm this number (lol), we’ll take it at face value.   I am a person who is often plagued by fear and uncertainty.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to ask myself “what’s the worse that could happen?”  Generally the answer isn’t that bad.  More importantly, as I’ve gotten older my collection of moments that have turned out …

Blog Trotting: Candid Christianity with Antwan Malone

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Blog Trotting | Leave a comment

Today’s featured blog is Candid Christianity by Antwan Malone.  Candid Christianity sports the pretty nifty tag line: Candid. Christian. Converstaion.  (Re)thinking Christianity One Conversation at a Time.  This is a blog after my own heart.  Let’s not just accept the status quo of Christian culture, let’s challenge it.  And more importantly than merely challenging it, let’s challenge it in a manner that talks about the issues openly and honestly.  We may not always agree.  We may not reach an official …

Lessons in the Dark

The other evening our power went out.  Apparently a transformer in our neighborhood blew.  Its a very common occurrence.  I live in an older neighborhood where the power lines are still above ground.  At least once every couple of months something bizarre happens that brings down the power – high winds, car accident, storm, heavy ice, or even too many people using their air conditioner. It never fails, that every time the power goes out in my house three things …

Article Review: Here Come Nobody

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Book Review | 1 Comment

Lately I haven’t had many original “insights” to share.  I feel like I’m going through a period of more listening and less talking…interesting concept.  I guess that is the reason we have 2 eyes, 2 ears, and only 1 mouth; we are supposed to take in more information than we put out. Here is another interesting article I came across in a facebook post last week.  Here Comes Nobody by Maureen Dowd (New York Times Op -Ed column). I’m not …

Book Review: 10 Reasons Christians Should Care About What They Eat

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Book Review | 1 Comment

I finally did it!  I wrote a book.  Well it’s a short eBook…but it’s mine and it’s published and it’s for sell at the Kindle Store (and I am SOOOO excited, can’t you tell).  You don’t need a Kindle to purchase and read the book 10 Reasons Christians Should Care About What They Eat So, given that I wrote the book, I’m not going to do an actual review (although, I must say it’s pretty awesome!!)  It is only because …

The Bible Tells me So (part 2)

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Guests | Leave a comment

While we’re on the topic of what the Bible says…. I ran across another humorous post 11 Things the Bible Bans but You do Anyway.  Its old, but still pretty funny.  Here’s the list in case you don’t want to read the whole article (but I suspect the list will peak your curiosity….)   1. Round haircuts. 2. Football. 3. Fortune telling. 4. Pulling out. 5. Tattoos. 6. Polyester, or any other fabric blends. 7. Divorce. 8. Letting people without …

The Bible Tells Me So (part 1)

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Guests | Leave a comment

One thing I like to emphasize to people is that you must read the bible for yourself.  Never let someone else tell you what the Bible says.  If someone says something is in the Bible…look it up.  And don’t just read the verse, read the verses around it so you have a context.  Take your Bible to church; when the minister starts quoting scripture write them down and look them up. I’d like to share a recent Facebook post.  It …

Wimps of the Bible: Onesimus, Part 2

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Wimps of the Bible | Leave a comment

The book of Philemon is a little letter Paul wrote to his friend asking him to take back a former slave, Onesimus, who had stolen from him.  There is a several valuable life lessons that we can glean from the 25 verses contained in the book.   Good things can come from bad situations.  Given that Onesimus was a slave he was considered property.  Having a slave run away is basically a loss of one’s property.  Having a slave steal …

Wimps of the Bible: Onesimus, Part 1

Posted on by ML Smith Posted in Wimps of the Bible | Leave a comment

If there is one thing wimps are good at, it’s running away from bad situations.  Today’s wimp is Onesimus.  Onesimus was a slave of one of Paul’s friend, Philemon.  Onesimus stole money from Philemon and fled.  While away he encounters Paul and Paul grows to view him as a son.  The Book of Philemon is one of the shortest books in the Bible consisting of a single chapter with 25 verses.  The book is a letter from Paul asking Philemon …
